En la ruina narrates two parallel stories: the investigation of an underwater archaeological site at the mouth of the Guadiana River and the representation of these discoveries through a particular carnival group that makes preparations for months to present at a contest.

En la ruina is an optimistic song that reports a decadent economic and social situation from an anthropological, historical, and identity-based point of view.

DIRECTION NOTES

The cultural heritage of our regions constitutes one of our country's greatest treasures and structures the foundation of our identity and history. Therefore, the recent archaeological discoveries along the Huelva coast open new paths of interpretation regarding our legacy and propose new questions about heritage management and diffusion.

Furthermore, folkloric customs (such as Carnival) fuel this transmission of identity between towns from different latitudes. This pagan tradition, which arrived in the Gulf of Cádiz after sailing across the Mediterranean, gradually became a way of life and our way of looking at the past and analyzing the present. To become our own form of "sung journalism".

Inspired by this rich cultural heritage, director Carlos Troncoso decided to document (using an iPhone 5) the rehearsals and daily life of a carnival group that makes a great effort to showcase our heritage. Over five months, this story of overcoming adversity, teamwork, commitment, creativity, enthusiasm, discipline, and perseverance develops.

This documentary film does not narrate great historical events or highlight great figures, but rather focuses on the humility of its protagonists and the simplicity with which events happened, which are represented honestly and affectionately.

The archaeologists in charge of investigating the sites on the Huelva coast will also be protagonists in this film, contributing with knowledge and data about their investigations, their conclusions, and prospects for the future.

Carnival, as an intangible asset, and Archaeology, as a tangible asset, constitute important tools for knowledge and understanding of our identity.

Definitely, En la ruina aims to be a documentary film that collaborates with the work of recovering and enhancing our heritage and traditions.
