Algo más que una pasión

(Available in Filmin)

Algo más que una pasión is the story of the pioneers of women's football in Spain.

Despite the absence of support from federations and society, in the early 1970s, there was a boom in women's football both in Spain and in Europe. Algo más que una pasión is the true story of that group of women who confronted the established order and fought to claim their right to become professional soccer players.

DIRECTION NOTES

Algo más que una pasión is a lesson in courage and female bravery during the late Francoist period, when a highlighted conservative nature witnessed the stirrings of a new, emerging progressivism. It is also a story about football, as a sporting, cultural, and social phenomenon, where the people conquer the pitch.

Although women's football already had a certain historical background, mainly in the rest of Europe (some countries like Italy and Denmark had years of experience), in the 1970s, this gender-based sporting movement re-emerged with force, beginning to mobilize the masses and demanding legitimacy and official recognition. The heroines of this story are Rosa, Sapi, Charo, Ani, Fuentes, Victoria, Astobieta, Inma, Pubill, Kubalita, Lis…

Throughout Spain, women's teams were organizing, driven by the same ambition and passion as their male counterparts to become professional footballers. As a result, matches and player inscriptions increased, and even some transfers took place, although all this boom remained at a very small level compared to men's football and other European women's leagues.

It's in this background that the first Women's National Football Team is (unofficially) summoned to represent Spain around the world. Thanks to the initiative of an independent dreamer, Rafael Muga.

It was a blossoming, a growing movement with players enthusiastic about the possibility of making a living working as athletes. But they had to face media and institutional opposition, and in many cases, they were ridiculed by a public that even questioned their femininity.

This documentary delves into the origins of a social and sporting movement and reflects on the role of women and their access to male-dominated spaces in our recent history.
